The Science
How does acupuncture work?
How acupuncture relieves pain is unclear to Western science. Evidence points to two mechanisms: a nerve block, and a release of pain-killing chemicals called endorphins.
The "gate theory" suggests that pain impulses are blocked from reaching the spinal cord or brain at various nerve connections — "gates" — much like a reflex. Stub your toe, and the impulse travels to your spine, then divides: one branch fires the muscles that pull your toe back.
Another branch proceeds to your brain, letting you feel the pain. When it arrives, it stimulates the release of narcotic-like substances called endorphins ("endogenous morphine"), which reduce pain throughout the body. In effect, acupuncture leads the body to respond as if it had been injured — without causing the injury itself.
-
i. The nerve "gate"
Pain signals are intercepted at nerve junctions before they reach the brain — the same pathways that drive a protective reflex.
-
ii. Endorphin release
The brain releases its own morphine-like chemicals, calming pain across the whole system rather than at a single point.
An estimated 3.1 million U.S. adults and 150,000 children were treated with acupuncture in a single year — a practice now firmly part of complementary medicine in the United States.

Our Purpose
To help as many people as possible become healthy — naturally. Beyond relieving pain and suffering, our vision is to promote and maintain optimal health and well-being through Traditional Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, and other methods of natural healing.
Asian Medicine isn't only for those who are already ill — it's for anyone who wants a healthier, happier life.
Think of it like a tune-up for your car: a regular acupuncture treatment is a check-up that helps maintain your health, rather than a repair after something breaks. It is always wiser to prevent disease than to chase it.
Through acupuncture, herbs, and wellness education, many health concerns can be addressed together — leaving you feeling better overall, not just in one place.

Dr. Park's Message
Be patient for your true health…
Just as nature requires time to restore damaged resources, the human body requires a reasonable amount of time to recover and heal — to reach homeostasis and function properly again. And that time differs for every individual, depending on his or her unique body structure and rhythm.
A Short Glossary
A few commonly used Traditional Medicine terms
Also called the Channel Network — a Traditional Medicine belief about the paths through which the life-energy known as Qi flows.
The densest fluid substance in the body, responsible for providing nourishment and the material basis for mental and emotional life.
A patient who shows signs of Deficiency lacks Qi (life-energy), Moisture, or Blood. They may also exhibit hypo-function of any organ or organ system.
A patient with an Excess condition has a surplus or congestion of Qi, Moisture, or Blood, and may show hyper-function of any organ or organ system.
The two fundamental forces that organize the universe.
+ Yang
Light, the Sun, noise, warmth, and activity. Includes the body's activity and the generation of metabolic heat.
Yang organs transform & discharge: Gallbladder, Small Intestine, Stomach, Large Intestine, Bladder.
To stay healthy, the body must be constantly moistened, nourished, and detoxified by an abundant supply of clean, fresh blood. Blood Stasis — when the flow of blood slows and becomes static — is an important pathology behind many disease processes in Traditional Medicine.
Normally blood is stored in the liver and propelled by heart energy (氣 Qi) through the body. If circulation stagnates, blood is retained in part of the body or overflows the vessels, resulting in stasis. It occurs frequently in long-term chronic illness, and — arising from emotions, diet, and other causes — may be the root of many age-related disharmonies. It is also commonly observed after surgery or traumatic injury.
The Liver system is most frequently affected by blood stasis; other affected organs are the Heart, Lung, Stomach, and Intestines.

Accessibility
Accessibility Statement
Pure Balance Healing Art Center is committed to making this website usable by everyone.
We believe everyone deserves equal access to health information. We are working to ensure this website is accessible to people with disabilities, and we aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Measures we take
To support accessibility, this site is built with:
- Sufficient color contrast for text and interface elements.
- Full keyboard navigation, with a visible focus indicator and a "skip to content" link.
- Semantic structure — landmarks, ordered headings, and labeled form fields — for screen-reader users.
- Text that resizes and reflows for browser zoom and custom text settings.
- Respect for reduced-motion preferences, and descriptive alternative text for images.
Conformance status
We aim for WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance and review the site regularly. Some content is provided through third-party services — for example, photos hosted on our website platform, embedded maps, and external review pages on Yelp, Google, and Facebook — which we do not fully control. We work to choose accessible providers and welcome reports about any barrier you encounter.
Ongoing effort
Accessibility is an ongoing process, not a one-time task. As we add or update content, we continue testing with keyboard navigation, screen readers, and zoom. If you find something that is hard to use, please tell us — your feedback helps us improve for everyone.
Tell us about a barrier
If you experience any difficulty accessing part of this website, or need information in an alternative format, please contact us. We will do our best to provide the information you need and to fix the issue.
